Its playoff time in the NHL and hockey fans everywhere are buzzing with excitement. Social media sites such as facebook and twitter are alive with playful (and sometimes not so playful) banter as diehard and loyal fans show support for their teams. Watching elite level athletes perform is always a treat, and the added bounty of Lord Stanley only adds to the level of breath taking feats that take place on the ice. These men are truly masters of their craft.
This year in particular I am especially excited to watch the playoffs because I get to see my friend and personal client Dion Phaneuf captain his team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, to their first appearance in the playoffs in nine years.
Toronto is a very passionate city when it comes to their beloved Leafs and have some of the most tenacious and dedicated fans in the league. Wearing the “C” for this storied franchise is a major responsibility and is a role he has stepped into and embraced with class and confidence.
Having the privilege of working with such a high caliber and elite athlete has given me a greater appreciation for what they have to endure when they skate out onto the ice. Dion is the most competitive and dedicated person I have ever come across in the gym and it shows when he is on the ice.
When working with him I have to remember that the Leafs have major investment in him and an entire cities hopes for the success of their team rest on his shoulders. Because of this, the preservation and safety of his body comes first and foremost. Also the longevity and heavy workload of the season has to be taken into account. Dion plays above the league average for minuets per game and is a workhorse. He has to be able to perform at a high level for long periods of time.
Dion is a competitor and feeds off the intensity of others, he requires that his trainer participate in the sessions and train with him………no clip board holding here. This means I have to keep myself in the best possible shape I can to accomplish this. I am very passionate about my own level of fitness and love this factor.
I am very excited to be working with “Big D” this off season……….but can wait a while longer. lol
GO LEAFS GO!!!
