From the beginner athlete to the professional athlete, chiropractic can optimize the body to peak performance levels as well as help with recovery and injury prevention. As we engage in any physical activity, we are pushing our bodies to do more. This can be a time when any imbalance in our alignment, muscle tone, or both, comes to the surface. This can be very discouraging, especially if you are starting out with a new physical activity. Recovery from the workout will also take longer if these problems arise. I tend to see a lot of people when they are starting out a new exercise program. At this time, past and any other imbalances can come to the forefront. This occurs because the body isn’t ready for the physical stress overload. Sometimes this discomfort/pain can deter the person from continuing.
I recently had a patient see me one week before her marathon debut. She hadn’t been able to run longer than 2 hours because of knee pain. The patient had already resigned to running a ½ marathon instead but was hoping I could turn that around. Fortunately, I am happy to say that she felt good enough to continue running the full marathon because the original injury improved due to chiropractic and acupuncture. The person was amazed on how good her body felt the next day after running the marathon. This emphasizes that if your body is optimally aligned your recovery is a lot quicker.
The seasoned athlete tends to have repetitive injuries by doing too many miles, too much weight, or too many repetitions. These conditions are harder to deal with because they are usually chronic in nature and certain compensating postures might have already occurred. Professional athletes need this care as much if not more because they are pushing their body to the limit all the time and if they are injured that could affect their performance and livelihood.
Chiropractic optimizes the body’s ability to function through proper nerve flow to the muscles and joints, allowing the body to move in the most efficient manner with the least resistance. This allows movement to take place with the least energy cost, thus providing endurance and power. This also reduces the chances of fatigue or muscle spasm and injury. When your body is misaligned you accelerate the arthritic process of the joints or bones.
