When I was about 10 years old, I declared to my mother, on a leisurely drive to the cottage, that at 16 I would obtain my driver’s permit, at 18 I would graduate from high school, vote liberal and attend the University of Ottawa to become a lawyer. I told her I would work very hard to make sure I succeeded.
On that day, my mother taught me a very valuable lesson.
Having listened to my life plan, she asked me to promise her one thing. She made me promise that in all of my planning, I would not forget to have fun and enjoy myself. She explained that if I wanted to succeed, goals where important but so was pure and simple enjoyment of life.
I believe it is important to have short term and long term goals. Thanks to my mother, enjoying life underlines all of my decisions. I’m not suggesting that we chose the easy route. I am suggesting that we chose the route that brings joy to our lives. It will make overcoming obstacles easier.
That being said, I leave you with my mother’s words of wisdom “don’t forget to have fun”!
