Botox: if there’s one injectable treatment surrounded in myths, untruths, and misunderstanding, it is certainly Botox. Unfortunately the rumors about this treatment make it hard to make an educated choice about whether or not to go under the needle. Let’s clear the air and send these Botox myths packing with the help of Rand Rusher, an RN and founder of RR Aesthetics in Beverly Hills.
Myth #1: You Can Tell When Someone Has Had Botox
Surely you’ve seen the jokes on TV about Botox gone wrong. Frozen faces, drooping eyelids, and expressionless smiles certainly get a few laughs, but they aren’t based in reality, especially if you choose a highly skilled injector. Rand explains, “When used properly Botox provides very subtle and natural results. Many of my patients are amazed at the changes they see and love that friends and family can’t explain the reason behind their ageless beauty.” For those that are interested in giving Botox a try, but that worry about taking the full-on plunge, Rand will recommend what he calls and “actor’s dose”. An actor’s dose is a smaller conservative dose of Botox. The results are much more subtle and it doesn’t last as long, but allows patients to see and experience Botox for themselves.
Myth #2: Botox Isn’t Safe
Since its FDA approval more than 10 years ago, Botox has been used on countless men and women to treat wrinkling as well as treat several other common problems. The treatment is very safe and very effective, with the right injector. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery 41% of all cosmetic procedures done in 2013 were Botox treatments.
Myth #3: Botox Can Treat Wrinkles All Over the Face
Botox is a wrinkle treatment, but it isn’t designed for every type of wrinkle. Botox works by relaxing overactive muscles that cause wrinkling. This allows the muscle to relax and the wrinkle to fade. Since Botox works by relaxing muscles, it only helps those wrinkles caused by muscle activity. It is a great choice for lines between the brow, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles. With and experienced injector you can also treat tiny lines around the mount, dimples in your chin and some areas of the neck. In general Botox works best on movement related wrinkles while dermal fillers are often a better choice for wrinkles that are moderate caused by ageing. The experts at RR Aesthetics strongly urge those interested in these treatments to be sure to find a highly skilled Botox injector. “When you choose a skilled injector they will know which treatments are best for each type of wrinkle and won’t force you to get treatments you don’t need. Botox provides amazing results, but it isn’t for every situation.”
Myth #4: Botox Results Take Weeks to See
Botox results aren’t instantaneous after you get the injections. Everyone should know that results are typically noticeable in just a couple of days (4 to 6 days) and they last for 3 months for the average person with some people having results up to 6 months. If you like the results you see (and most people do) you can repeat the treatment to keep up your results. If you’re injected on a Wednesday or a Thursday, you’ll probably see a difference before the weekend is over. In fact, many patients like that the results take a bit of time to manifest. Since the change doesn’t occur instantly the results are a bit more subtle and less noticeable by those you see often. No one ever needs to know that you’ve had Botox.
Myth #5: Botox is Extremely Painful
When people think of needles and injectable treatments they automatically assume the procedure will hurt. Much of the time this isn’t the case. Many of RR Aesthetics patients describe the discomfort as “just a pinch”. Numbing creams can be used to further dull any sensation you might feel. Best of all, the treatment takes just minutes, so you’ll be in and out quickly.
Botox might be misunderstood, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a valuable weapon in your beauty arsenal. Using a qualified knowledgeable injector will make sure you get the best results. If you’re considering Botox make sure you ask questions and clarify any points of confusion you may have before your injections.
