Goals are the key things that keep us going when we are in a rut or plateauing. They help you track your progress, keep you focused, and maintain motivation while you a trying to reach your desired purpose. Setting goals breaks down the process needed to achieve a specific outcome.
Like most of us, I have long-term and short-term goals. My fitness goals have to be revisited frequently. I am a very visual person, and Iike writing things down on paper so I can see it in black and white. There are many methods known to help achieve your goals but I have always been a fan of the SMART method. If you are not familiar with SMART, they are actually many different variations to the acronym. Here is the variation I use and hopefully this can help you set some of your short and long term goals.
SPECIFIC: Define EXACTLY what your goal is and make it clear so that anyone reading it knows exactly what you mean. “I want to ……”
MEASURABLE: Judge the timeline on when the goal has to be achieved
ATTAINABLE: Don’t set yourself up for failure. Make sure you actually DO what you set out to do
REALISTIC: Simple. Keep it real!
TIMELY: Create a deadline to achieve your goal.
Of course, these principles are not the only way to plan and achieve goals, but it can certainly help you in figuring out and holding yourself accountable to them. I urge you to also use determination, passion, and common sense. Good luck to everyone trying to reach their goals!
Train hard, fight harder!
